U.S. documents for use in Mexico

Start with your document and the receiving office's instructions. Notary Geek checks the document source, any notary or authentication steps, and the required format before quoting the package.

The place where you sign, the place where the document will be used, and the delivery address can be different. We review each separately.

Plan the document route yourself

This guide is free to read and use. An apostille authenticates the specified signature, capacity and seal or stamp; it does not guarantee acceptance of the underlying document.

Reviewed . Read the matching JSON and evidence references.

Which direction is the document travelling?

A document sent to Mexico is authenticated by the authority for its place of origin; a Mexican public document sent abroad goes through the appropriate Mexican authority. A Mexican citizen signing a U.S. notarial document does not make that notarial act Mexican. An existing Mexican birth certificate does not become a U.S. public record because its holder is in Florida.

Start with the exact document, issuing authority, destination territory, intended use and filing date. Then ask the receiving office whether authentication is needed at all. An exemption can save the whole apostille step.

Mexico joined in 1994; the Convention took effect in 1995

Mexico deposited its accession on 1 December 1994. Its entry into force was 14 August 1995. Those are different legal events: the accession date alone did not make the Convention route usable that day.

For present U.S.-Mexico documents within the Convention, use the competent origin-country apostille rather than adding Mexican consular legalization. Historical transactions need the effective dates that applied then; a present list is not a historical answer.

Why two names on the treaty list are not enough

HCCH records Mexico's 20 January 2016 objection to Kosovo's accession and does not show a Mexican withdrawal in the inspected notification. The Mexico-Kosovo Convention route therefore cannot be inferred merely from both countries appearing in the table. Get the actual alternative authentication instructions; this guide does not invent a consular chain for that pair.

Territory also matters. Name the actual destination rather than assuming the treaty position of a metropolitan State covers every overseas territory. Mexico's authority record divides document jurisdiction among federal and local offices; that domestic division is different from an international territorial extension.

What an apostille proves—and what the recipient still decides

The certificate authenticates the public signature, the signer's official capacity and, where relevant, the seal. It does not make every statement true, grant a representative powers omitted from a power of attorney, recognize a degree or decide a visa application.

A genuine document can still be wrong for the filing: an incomplete certified judgment, an insufficient power, an untranslated attachment or a record outside the recipient's permitted age range. Identify that defect separately from whether the apostille itself is genuine.

Federal or state: choose by the public signature

DICOPPU/SEGOB handles federal documents. HCCH lists 32 local competent authorities for state documents. SEGOB expressly excludes state/municipal documents, including Mexico City civil-status records, state criminal records and documents issued by Mexican notaries.

For a Mexican civil-registry birth, marriage, divorce or death certificate, start with the state that issued it. For a federal agency record, start with federal requirements. Do not choose the cheapest office in another state: it may have no jurisdiction or signature record for the document.

Originals, certified records and copy statements

The paper federal process calls for the original public document, with the federal official's name, position and original handwritten signature registered in the authority's system. A scan submitted for preliminary advice is not itself a completed apostille application.

A notarial copy or private declaration is a different public act from the issuing office's certified record. Guanajuato rejects simple copies and distinguishes permitted notarial acts from matters reserved to another public official. Do not substitute a convenient notarized cover sheet when the recipient requires an issuer-certified birth certificate or judgment.

The federal fee and payment reference

The official federal FAQ gives the 2026 apostille fee as MXN 2,126.14 per document. The older HCCH authority page displays MXN 1,878.39 and was last updated 20 November 2024. Use the current Mexican payment instructions rather than paying the older directory amount. Local fees differ: Guanajuato givesMXN 159 for 2026, while the undated HCCH state table saysMXN 72.

Use the official Hoja de Ayuda generator for the applicant type, procedure and document count. It instructs applicants to total unrounded fees first and round only the final payment under the stated statutory rule. Payment, document preparation, translation and outbound/return carriage are separate costs; no national all-inclusive price follows from the apostille fee.

Direct counter filing or someone attending for you

The institutional notice states that 1-5 eligible in-person documents submitted Monday-Friday 09:00-13:00 are delivered the same business day. For 6-10 documents, submit before 10:00 for delivery the following business day. Closures, eligibility defects and missing preliminary certifications still matter; these are published service conditions, not a delivery guarantee.

A representative can attend: the federal FAQ calls for the original public document, original payment receipt, the attending person's valid original photo ID and printed CURP. Do not transfer requirements from this representative visit into an unrelated state or online process.

Direct courier submission works from elsewhere in Mexico or abroad

SEGOB expressly offers a courier route without travelling to Mexico City. Its mailing instruction names Río Amazonas 62, tercer piso, Colonia Cuauhtémoc, Alcaldía Cuauhtémoc, Ciudad de México 06500. Use the mailing floor in that instruction; the FAQ separately describes ground-floor counter attendance.

Send the original eligible document, original payment receipt, signed request, required ID/CURP copies and prepaid return waybill with collection service plus a return envelope. The guidance distinguishes Mexican applicants' CURP from a foreign applicant's valid passport. Check that the carrier can perform the actual return and collection from that office; a prepaid outbound shipment is not a return arrangement.

The stated courier readiness is four business days after receipt, before return transit. This is different from the same-day counter service. Allow time for both journeys and correction of a deficient submission.

What the free-form written request must communicate

The official one-page example is a usable starting point: date/place; the named director/office; applicant's full name; complete notification address, phone and email; number and description of documents; apostille/legalization request; destination country; enclosure of original payment receipt; return-carrier name/waybill/address; ID/CURP copies; applicant's name and signature.

Use the current official example and current addressee rather than a private vendor's form. Keep the document inventory consistent with the payment and the originals actually enclosed. A request for apostille is not a request for the authority to correct an underlying record.

School documents: do not assume every degree needs the same preliminary step

For private higher education with federal RVOE, DGAIR's current page gives a preliminary authentication process and a 2026 fee of MXN 240.42 per document. It also says documents issued after 16 August 2025 may go directly to SEGOB without that prior DGAIR step. This statement sits within that specific page's scope; it is not a blanket exemption for every Mexican school.

Check the institution's federal RVOE and the document's issue date. For an electronic title/degree that still needs DGAIR authentication, the page requires the printout with the complete institution-supplied XML text on its reverse. It lists ID, fee receipt and, for another attendee, simple authorization and specified ID copies. Ask about an issue date exactly 16 August 2025: the published exception says after, not on.

Sources: mx-dgair: Scope; Before Starting; documents after 16 August 2025; requirements; electronic XML; 2026 fee

UNAM, UAM and other institutions have distinct preparation

UNAM's current instructions distinguish a title/degree/diploma bearing Rector and Secretary General signatures; study certificates with an issuer-certified copy; certified study plans; and other university diplomas/letters requiring recognition of the issuing signature through DCCD. An apostille is not academic equivalency or professional licensing.

SEGOB's prior-step page separately identifies IPN/federal schools, UAM, UNAM-affiliated private schools and Chapingo. Start with the institution-specific category instead of buying a generic notarial copy. The older general DGAIR instruction and newer dated exception should be reconciled against the actual document before paying for a preliminary step.

Company documents, notaries and corredores públicos

A company's private authorization, a notarial instrument, a commercial-registry record and a corredor público's act are not interchangeable. Identify which public signature the recipient needs authenticated. A Mexican notary's document belongs with the appropriate local authority; federal SEGOB excludes ordinary state notarial documents.

For a corredor público act on the federal route, Economy's published procedure provides preliminary signature/rubric/seal certification for subsequent apostille or legalization. Its written request identifies the act and destination and accompanies the testimony, simple copy and specified payment/representation materials. Verify the current preliminary fee rather than treating the apostille fee as covering both offices.

Court and state criminal records need their own signature chain

A certified court record is not a private sworn account of what a judgment says. Obtain the issuing court's correct certified record, including the required finality or complete attachments when the recipient asks for them, then verify the signature chain with the competent authority.

As a concrete local example, Guanajuato says court documents require the original rubber stamp and handwritten signature of the Secretary General of its Supreme Court; a locally issued certification must first go to that central office for that signature/seal. State and federal criminal-record certificates also follow different issuing jurisdictions. This local example does not establish another state's checklist.

Electronic apostille: a specific federal criminal-record route

Mexico's official service is specifically for the federal criminal-record certificate, CAPF, issued by SSPC. HCCH's 11 December 2025 notification dates its electronic apostille launch to 1 October 2025 and specifies QR verification. The portal asks for the holder's CURP, certificate folio and email; a physical SSPC certificate is directed to the separate paper guidance. The current indexed federal catalog's online step 3 requires a CAPF no more than 3 calendar days old when entering the folio. Recheck that live instruction before beginning; this input-age limit is different from the receiving office's validity period or the total processing time.

The catalog describes bank-counter or online-bank payment using the generated capture line and receipt of the apostille by email for color printing. Preserve the issued digital file. The portal says payment accreditation can take up to 72 business hours; the catalog omits business in one formulation. Do not promise 72 elapsed hours or confuse payment recognition with guaranteed completed delivery. No universal e-Apostille eligibility for Mexican birth certificates or degrees was established here.

Foreign records for immigration: authenticate the requested evidence

The published visa guidelines distinguish the evidence needed for each category and permit original, certified-copy or digitally certified documents where the particular procedure provides. Foreign public documents presented to INM generally need origin-country apostille or Mexican consular legalization, except passports/identity-travel documents; documents in another language need Spanish translation.

The marriage/birth record proving a relationship, the passport proving identity and a financial statement proving resources serve different functions. Do not buy an apostille for every paper by default. Read the actual consular/INM category checklist and ask which attachments and translation credentials apply. The migration-procedure guidance refers to officially recognized expert translators; a privately notarized translator statement is not automatically that qualification.

Foreign birth registration: investigate the exemption before ordering apostille

The 4 June 2024 amendment to CNPCF Articles 314 and 1144 removes consular legalization/apostille for specified foreign birth documents establishing Mexican nationality and identity of Mexicans born abroad or returning Mexican migrants, for birth registration under the applicable rules. It calls for the foreign birth certificate and the Mexican parent's birth record. It is not a waiver for a foreign marriage certificate in an unrelated immigration file.

The Code warns of gradual jurisdictional implementation. Baja California's 2 September 2026 announcement describes an electronic-verification campaign for eligible U.S.-born minors in Tijuana/San Felipe without apostille, translation or a no-record letter, but explicitly limited it to 1-30 September 2026. That expired campaign is evidence of a specific implementation, not proof that it is open today. Ask the intended registry which current implementation and translation rules cover this record.

Power of attorney: content first, then choose the notarial route

Ask the receiving Mexican notary, bank, court or registry what powers, property details, party identification and formal instrument it needs before signing. Authenticating an insufficient signature certificate does not supply missing authority to sell property or conduct a transaction.

A Mexican consulate can issue specified Mexican notarial acts for use in Mexico; its guidance says those acts do not need apostille/legalization/protocolization there. A foreign notarial instrument follows its own origin-country authentication route and the recipient's substantive requirements. Compare the consular appointment/issuance and delivery with foreign notarization plus apostille; neither is inherently mandatory for every power.

Translate the right material for the actual recipient

Translation of a document and authentication of its public signature answer different questions. Ask whether the recipient needs the entire instrument, apostille and attachments translated; whether a Mexican authorized expert is required; and whether a translation done abroad is accepted.

A bilingual heading does not translate the body of a judgment. An apostille on a translator's notarized declaration authenticates that notarial signature, not the government signature on the source certificate. Procedure-specific translation rules remain relevant even when the origin apostille is valid.

Verification, digital files and a failed lookup

HCCH lists a federal e-Register and some local verification services; do not use a federal lookup as if it covered every Mexican state. The linked federal register timed out during this research, so this guide supplies the official locator without claiming a successful live certificate check.

Use the issuing authority's verification address and the exact certificate details. Keep a digital apostille as issued rather than editing its contents or relying only on a screenshot. HCCH says an e-Apostille cannot be refused solely because it is electronic; that principle does not expand treaty scope or eliminate document-specific filing requirements. A failed lookup calls for issuer follow-up, not an immediate accusation of forgery.

Recover from a refusal by identifying the actual defect

Get the refusing office, written reason and exact document or signature it considers deficient. A wrong issuing jurisdiction, missing preliminary certification, insufficient instrument, inaccurate payment, translation issue and unverifiable apostille require different repairs.

Preserve the returned document and certificate. Ask the issuer about correction/reissue for a certificate error; ask the source office for a corrected record when its contents are wrong; ask the receiving office to identify its authority when demanding another legalization solely for an in-scope apostille. Do not detach a certificate, alter a signed record or add a new stamp yourself. Visa guidelines separately provide an omission-correction process; authentication alone does not compel a favorable visa decision.

Direct filing, a local attendee or managed assistance

For eligible federal paper records, direct courier filing avoids a Mexico City trip; for the specified CAPF, the official electronic route can avoid shipping that application. A local attendee may be useful where counter timing, document collection or a preliminary-certification visit changes the deadline. It does not change eligibility, the public fee or the recipient's decision.

A managed service can add document classification, checklist reconciliation, authorized collection, translation coordination and recovery tracking. Compare its separately disclosed charge and custody handoffs against the direct route. Assistance is optional; it cannot guarantee a government turnaround or make the underlying document acceptable.

Connected questions worth settling before submission

Was this record issued by a federal office, a state registry, a court, a notary or a corredor público? Does the recipient need that original act, a certified copy, a complete judgment, a particular power or a separate recognition procedure? Is the chosen translation acceptable for this specific filing?

This batch has not established all 32 local fees/forms/return arrangements, every foreign territorial/bilateral pair, uniform recognition of foreign RON instruments, the exact 16 August 2025 DGAIR boundary, or a universal birth-registration implementation. Those remain substantive research questions. The current indexed CAPF instructions need a fully retained live-page refresh; no actual service transaction or recipient acceptance was tested.

Mexico City: classify the signature before choosing the counter

A Mexico City public official or Mexico City notary is the starting point for procedure 701. A federal certificate issued to somebody who lives in the city does not become a city document. For a court judgment, identify the official who certifies the copy; for a company deed or power of attorney, identify the notary and the notarial act actually being authenticated.

The city checklist requires the original public document with official seal and handwritten signature. The sources reviewed do not establish one preliminary court, education or company certification that applies to every document in those categories. Identify the certifying office and ask whether that signature is registered before paying for a replacement or a notarial copy.

Sources: mx-cdmx-701: Procedure 701: requirements, steps, costs, public counter and last-update label mx-cdmx-form: Download TCEJUR-DGJEL_LYA_1.pdf; actual two-page blank form, requirements on page 1 and duplicate/receipt instructions on page 2

Mexico City: prepare the actual application and receipt copy

The downloadable TCEJUR-DGJEL_LYA_1 form distinguishes legalization from apostille and asks for destination country and document count. It provides applicant identification fields and a signature for the interested person or legal representative. Use the applicable fields; the form does not establish that every conditional demographic field is mandatory.

Its checklist calls for identification in original and copy, the original public document, the signed application in original and copy, and the original payment capture line and voucher. Page 2 says to submit in duplicate and retain a duplicate bearing the receiving officer’s original stamp and signature. Keep that receipt for collection. Detailed representative-authority requirements beyond the signature field remain to be confirmed.

Sources: mx-cdmx-form: Download TCEJUR-DGJEL_LYA_1.pdf; actual two-page blank form, requirements on page 1 and duplicate/receipt instructions on page 2

Mexico City: confirm the counter and collection window

The currently downloadable form names Candelaria de los Patos 51, Colonia 10 de Mayo, Venustiano Carranza, postal code 15290, for the city’s public-document legalization and apostille service. It displays weekday reception from 09:00 to 11:00 and collection from 13:30 to 14:30. Confirm the current operating window and closures before travel: the parent service page carries a 2021 update date.

The displayed process is presentation, document review, a folio or stamped receipt, and collection with that receipt. This supports direct attendance. It does not establish a current postal service, prepaid return-label policy or remote filing entitlement. A helper can add practical value by checking signatures, assembling duplicates and attending only when authorized, without changing the official eligibility rules.

Mexico City: do not pay an obsolete displayed amount

Procedure 701 displays 123 pesos for an apostille and cites Fiscal Code article 248, section VII, but its last-update label is 16 December 2021. That amount is not verified as the 2026 tariff. Obtain the current official payment reference and amount before paying, and keep both the capture line and bank voucher required by the form.

A 2026 fiscal-code initiative found during research contains a different amount. A proposed bill does not establish an enacted tariff. The final current tariff and any current payment-channel instructions remain release questions; neither the old display nor the proposal should be substituted for a live official assessment.

Mexico City: an authentic signature is not approval of the contents

The city form explains that the apostille certifies signature, signatory capacity and seal rather than the document’s contents. A recipient can still require a recent civil record, a particular judgment certification, specific corporate powers, a translation or recognition of a qualification.

The inspected checklist asks for an original with autograph signature. It does not prove that a downloaded civil certificate, digitally signed court record, scan or ordinary photocopy is accepted through this counter. Before converting a digital original into paper or buying a notarized copy, establish which public act the city can authenticate and which version the recipient will accept.

Jalisco: public state documents and the registered signature

JAL-AC-0001 covers signatures of Jalisco public officials and notaries. Its examples include civil-status records, state criminal-record and driving-license certifications, educational records, residence records, deeds and notarial powers. The record asks for originals with seal, autograph, name and official capacity; the signature must be in its register.

Tell the issuing office that the document will be used abroad. If a court certification or company extract is proposed, identify the issuing official and registered signature rather than assuming the category alone is eligible. Federal originals belong with the competent federal route; the Jalisco list expressly excludes examples such as federal SEP, COFEPRIS, IMSS, INE and passport documents.

Sources: mx-jal-record: Public citizen-view print record: procedure updatedAt; requirements, steps, authorized_people, additional_info and subforms

Jalisco: notarization does not cure the wrong origin

The current record expressly rejects internet printouts and documents bearing digital or electronic signatures for this procedure. It also rejects notarized certified copies of government records reserved to their issuing jurisdiction: its examples include INE/passports, state birth records/driving licenses, municipal licenses/medical certificates and foreign visas/birth certificates.

An eligible Jalisco notarial deed or power of attorney is therefore a different case from asking a Jalisco notary to copy a foreign birth certificate. The latter does not move the original civil act into Jalisco’s apostille jurisdiction. Recover by obtaining the appropriate original or certified record and using its issuing jurisdiction, rather than paying for another copy with the same defect.

Jalisco: direct attendance, review first, then official payment

The Área de Certificaciones del Estado is listed at Prolongación Alcalde 1855, Miraflores, Guadalajara, Jalisco 44270, between Chihuahua and Tamaulipas, near CODE. The office directory lists Monday–Friday 09:00–14:00; appointment is not required in the procedure record.

The published sequence is to present the document for review, pay at a state revenue office, then file the document with the official payment receipt and collect it. The record says a third person may request the service without a power of attorney. This is a direct alternative to buying a commercial handling service. It lists in-person service; no current direct postal submission or courier return procedure was established.

Jalisco: three published fee classes, with separate timing questions

The April 2026 public record displays ordinary service at 538 pesos, urgent service at 1,076 pesos and extra-urgent service at 1,614 pesos. These are the displayed class amounts, not three charges to add together. Ordinary payment reference is 14019; urgent lists 14019 and additional 14020, while extra-urgent lists 14019 and additional 14633. Confirm the assessed class and current reference before payment.

The record describes payment before starting and at state revenue offices, with validity tied to the fiscal year. Its legal-reference label mentions 2026 while the associated enactment dates point to 2024/2025; that inconsistent metadata needs correction or confirmation. The published current service amounts are reported as current agency procedural guidance, with that qualification, rather than represented as independently verified statutory text.

Sources: mx-jal-fees: subforms b63446c948b, a2bbd62398e and a2509f84683: capturar_monto, payment location and reference fields

Jalisco: published windows do not guarantee your deadline

The maximum stated response period is four business days, with an exception where the official’s signature is not registered. An extra-urgent note describes presentation between 09:00 and 12:00 and response between 13:30 and 14:30. A separate fee label incorrectly renders the cutoff as “12:00 am”; the useful-information text gives the midday window. Confirm that cutoff and service availability before committing to travel.

The record says the apostille itself does not expire; the foreign recipient determines how recent the underlying record must be. A birth certificate can therefore carry a valid authentication and still be too old for the intended registration. Arrange reissue when the recipient requires it, rather than buying another apostille on a record that remains unacceptable.

University of Guadalajara: prepare the educational certification first

UDG’s issuing procedure covers its students and graduates and those of incorporated schools. It separates a total or partial bachillerato certificate, a study statement and a study plan. Its checklist calls for an original certificate; a statement printed on one side, legible and paginated with the school control coordinator’s seal/signature; or a bound, legible and paginated study plan with the institution’s seals/signatures. Identification and the applicable paid university deposit slip are also specified.

This university legalization or certification is a preliminary educational act, distinct from the state apostille and from foreign academic recognition. The page directs applicants to Archivo de Graduados for the payment format and describes bank payment, then advertises Ventanilla Virtual as an alternative for formerly in-person services. Confirm the current channel and university charge; no current amount is established by this source.

University of Guadalajara: representation differs from the state counter

The UDG page permits a close relative, giving parents and siblings as examples, with a completed simple authorization and ID copies for those involved. The linked one-page form separately authorizes processing and receiving the legalized certificate and includes grantor, acceptor and two witness signatures. Its date line has blanks for day and month but hard-codes 2025; obtain current completion instructions instead of assuming that year remains appropriate.

At collection UDG asks for the procedure receipt and official identification. Those university rules must not be replaced by the Jalisco state apostille record’s separate third-person-without-power rule. A family member who can lodge the state apostille may still need different documents to obtain the university’s preliminary certification.

Nuevo León: establish the state procedure before paying or shipping

Nuevo León has a current public catalog locator for legalization and apostille, and its official privacy notice identifies the Unidad de Legalizaciones. The catalog fields could not be extracted in this research session. That is a retrieval limit, not evidence that applicants cannot obtain the service.

Before paying or sending an original, obtain the current procedure’s exact competent counter, issuer/signature eligibility, fee unit and fiscal-year amount, payment reference, identity/representation checklist, processing time, collection authority and any expressly offered postal/return channel. A privacy-contact address is insufficient to establish a filing address. No Nuevo León price, courier route or electronic apostille promise is asserted here.

UANL electronic degree: print and certify signatures for foreign authentication

UANL describes an electronic degree with signatures, QR code and a security chain. Its specific foreign-use note instructs the holder to print the electronic degree and go to the Dirección del Departamento Escolar y Archivo for signature certification, for which a cost applies. Do that university step before determining the competent state authentication route.

The degree-issue procedure uses a SIASE request and an authorized-bank payment receipt and later digital delivery instructions. Those are university issuance arrangements, not proof that the state apostille can be requested or returned electronically. The university’s QR verification of its own record does not by itself authenticate a state apostille or guarantee professional recognition abroad.

UANL complete and partial certificates: a different record from the degree

UANL offers complete and partial electronic study certificates recording subjects, dates and grades. Its process includes faculty or school validation of the kardex and a university payment receipt payable at an authorized bank. For legalization or apostille, its note specifically requires printing the certificate and obtaining signature certification at the Dirección del Departamento Escolar y Archivo, with an additional cost.

Choose the certificate the recipient actually requests: a degree proves an award, while a complete or partial certificate supplies academic detail. A recipient may need both, or a study plan, for evaluation. University issuance, signature certification, the eventual apostille, translation and foreign recognition are separate decisions and possible charges; no combined price or end-to-end time has been established.

Incoming academic documents: recover from an incorrect embassy instruction

A UANL nursing admissions page for the January–June 2024 cycle tells foreign applicants to obtain apostilles at the corresponding Mexican embassy. Preserve that statement as a specific defect in a historical recipient page: under the Convention an apostille comes from the competent authority of the document’s place of origin. A Mexican embassy is not substituted for that origin authority merely because the university is in Mexico.

Use the current program’s actual checklist to identify the required award, transcript, translation and any academic revalidation. For an in-scope document between countries with applicable treaty relations, distinguish the origin apostille from consular legalization; for an out-of-scope route, establish the appropriate legalization chain. Ask the recipient to clarify contradictory instructions before buying the wrong act. No inquiry or application was sent during this work.

State document recovery: diagnose the failed step

If a signature is unregistered, obtain instructions from the issuer or certification office for the correct signatory or preliminary certification. If the origin is wrong, return to the issuing jurisdiction. If a printed digital record is excluded, seek the eligible version rather than treating a notary copy as a universal cure. If payment is wrong, establish the office’s correction or refund process; none is assumed here.

After issue, compare the apostille’s named signatory, capacity, seal and attached document with what was submitted. A failed online lookup can be a verification problem rather than proof of fraud; preserve the reference and consult the issuing authority’s current verification instructions. These sources do not establish a working public lookup for each of the three state procedures. The receiving body still decides the underlying record’s acceptability.

Next state questions: obtain the missing operational evidence

The next Mexico City questions are the enacted current article 248 tariff, current payment reference, current counter hours, registered court/education signatures, digital-record eligibility and detailed representative rules. For Jalisco, reconcile the fee-law citation dates and the extra-urgent noon label, verify signature-registration recovery and any current verification service, and establish whether an official postal alternative exists.

For Nuevo León, obtain the substantive current public procedure and a current fee source before publishing a state-counter how-to. Bind civil, court, notarial, education and company examples to their actual registered signatory and preliminary certification; do not fill those gaps with another state’s rules. Verify UANL’s current signature-certification charge, completion time and resulting signatory. None of these three-state additions completes all 32 Mexican jurisdictions.

Worked examples

Origin, destination and date change the answer

These examples explain the authentication route. They do not decide the receiving office's substantive requirements.

Mexico to United States

Certified Mexican public record. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

The Convention is in force for this pair; the document must be in scope and apostilled by the competent Mexican origin authority. This does not decide the U.S. recipient's document requirements.

Sources: mx-status: Mexico row; accession/EIF columns; legend and update date mx-status-full: Mexico, United States, Canada and Thailand rows; objections throughout full report mx-convention: Articles 1-7, 12-13

Mexico — federal to United States

Original eligible federal public document submitted from outside Mexico City. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

Use the federal authority's direct courier process with original record/receipt/request/identity and return materials. Its four-business-day readiness statement excludes the journeys; no local intermediary is inherently required.

Sources: mx-status-full: Mexico, United States, Canada and Thailand rows; objections throughout full report mx-courier: Tramites al interior de la Republica Mexicana o en el Extranjero; numbered 1-10; documentation list; four-business-day note mx-request-example: One-page official free-form request example; addressee; identity/contact; inventory; purpose; return; signature

Mexico — Guanajuato to United States

Original certified Guanajuato birth record. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

Use Guanajuato's competent state authority, not federal SEGOB. Its published 2026 MXN 159 fee is a local example, not a national price. The U.S. recipient may instead exempt apostille for its purpose.

Sources: mx-guanajuato: 2026 fee; state-only documents; educational and court signature chains; simple-copy restrictions mx-authorities: Federal documents; 32 state authorities; e-Registers; practical price; last updated mx-status-full: Mexico, United States, Canada and Thailand rows; objections throughout full report

Mexico — UNAM to United States

UNAM degree bearing Rector and Secretary General signatures. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

UNAM's category-specific preparation directs the original to SEGOB. Do not impose a private notarized-copy prerequisite; academic recognition remains separate.

Sources: mx-unam: Indicaciones; four document categories and DCCD preparation mx-status-full: Mexico, United States, Canada and Thailand rows; objections throughout full report

Mexico — private higher education with federal RVOE to United States

Academic document issued exactly 16 August 2025. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

The current DGAIR exception says after 16 August 2025. It does not settle this exact-day boundary, and no broader exemption is inferred. Confirm the actual issue date and required signature chain.

Sources: mx-dgair: Scope; Before Starting; documents after 16 August 2025; requirements; electronic XML; 2026 fee

Mexico — federal SSPC to United States

Eligible electronically issued CAPF. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

A specific official e-Apostille workflow exists for the federal certificate. CURP/folio/email, correct payment and intact digital output matter; this is not proof that all Mexican records can use that portal.

Sources: mx-electronic-portal: Federal criminal-record service; required CURP/folio/email; physical-document alternative; payment notice mx-electronic-catalog: Online steps 3 and 9 for federal criminal record: no more than 3 calendar-day issue age on folio entry; payment recognition; email and color printing mx-electronic-launch: HCCH e-APP Notification No 11 of 2025, English page 1, conditions 1-4; French/Spanish pages 2-3 mx-status-full: Mexico, United States, Canada and Thailand rows; objections throughout full report

United States — Florida to Mexico

Signer-created power of attorney with Florida notarial act. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

The notarial public act follows its origin authority's apostille route. Before signing, identify the required powers and form from the applicable recipient instructions. Florida's designated authority authenticates the Florida notarial act; an apostille does not grant omitted authority or prove universal acceptance of a foreign RON instrument.

United States to Mexico — intended civil registry not yet identified

Foreign birth record for claimed Mexican-nationality registration. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

Investigate the specific statutory exemption and local implementation before paying for apostille. Registry eligibility, parent records and verification procedure are missing, so neither apostille necessity nor exemption is asserted for the particular applicant.

Mexico City to Spain

Mexico City notarial power of attorney. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

For the qualifying Mexico City notarial public act, the applicable treaty route is an origin apostille. Use the city route for that signature, with original deed, application duplicates and current official payment instructions. The apostille authenticates the public act; it does not establish that the powers, property description or form satisfy the Spanish transaction. Identify those recipient requirements before signing.

Mexico City to United States

Federal certificate held by a Mexico City resident. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

For a qualifying Mexican federal public certificate the Mexico–United States treaty route is an origin apostille. Residence and the place where a document is carried do not change its issuer. Procedure 701 covers city officials/notaries; identify the competent federal route for the federal public act instead of paying the city tariff because its counter is nearby.

Jalisco to Spain

Internet-printed Jalisco birth certificate. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

JAL-AC-0001 expressly excludes internet printouts/digital signatures. Establish an eligible civil-registry original with the required registered signature and seal, and the recipient’s record-age requirement. A notarized copy of the state birth record is also expressly excluded by this procedure.

Sources: mx-jal-record: Public citizen-view print record: procedure updatedAt; requirements, steps, authorized_people, additional_info and subforms

United States to Mexico

Foreign birth certificate copied by a Jalisco notary. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

The state procedure rejects notarized copies of foreign government records. Obtain the proper origin certificate and authentication route; a local copy does not move the foreign civil act into Jalisco’s jurisdiction. Any Mexican registration exception must be tested separately for its exact purpose and applicable law.

Sources: mx-jal-record: Public citizen-view print record: procedure updatedAt; requirements, steps, authorized_people, additional_info and subforms mx-convention: Articles 1-7, 12-13

Jalisco to France

UDG study plan and bachillerato certificate. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

UDG has separate original/format requirements for the certificate and study plan. A sibling using the university route needs its simple authorization and ID copies under the university page; Jalisco’s third-person-without-power rule applies at the state apostille step and cannot replace UDG’s requirements. Confirm the current university channel and state fee class.

Jalisco to United States

Eligible Jalisco notarial deed needed quickly. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: Apostille authentication route

For an eligible Jalisco notarial public act the Mexico–United States treaty route is an origin apostille. The record displays extra-urgent service at 1,614 pesos and a 09:00–12:00 presentation window, with a contradictory am label elsewhere. Confirm the cutoff and signature registration before travel; the published service window is not a guarantee of travel, shipping or recipient acceptance by a deadline.

Nuevo León to Spain

UANL electronic degree. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

UANL specifically tells holders needing legalization/apostille to print the degree and obtain university signature certification at DEyA, with a cost. The QR code and blockchain issue do not remove that stated step. Establish the current state procedure and the recipient’s recognition/translation requirements separately.

Sources: mx-uanl-degree: Proceso; Nota on printing electronic title and DEyA signature certification mx-nl-catalog: Current public procedure URL; client-rendered shell only

Nuevo León to United States

UANL partial electronic study certificate for transfer evaluation. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

The partial certificate supplies academic detail rather than proving a completed degree. UANL requires a print and signature certification for legalization/apostille; the evaluator decides whether it needs that authentication, a direct university transmission, translations or additional course descriptions. Confirm the actual requested delivery format instead of assuming a degree alone is enough.

United States to Nuevo León

Foreign academic award for a UANL program. Transaction date: .

Expected outcome: More evidence needed

A historical 2024-cycle nursing page mislocates the apostille at a Mexican embassy. For an in-scope U.S. public document with applicable treaty relations, use the competent origin authority, then establish the current program’s translation and academic revalidation requirements. Do not treat that old admission page as the current checklist or add a consular act solely because of its defective sentence.

What matters for this destination

Notarized document package for Mexico

Follow the public signature from its origin to the receiving procedure. Compare direct filing and optional help, distinguish federal and state documents, and check whether an apostille is needed for the particular purpose.

Understand documents going to or from Mexico: origin authority, federal and state procedures, direct filing, electronic criminal-record apostilles, translations, recipient exceptions and recovery.

The destination country matters, but the document source controls the U.S. route. Notary Geek first identifies the issuing authority, document type, notary state if any, destination country or territory, recipient instructions, and whether the receiving party needs an original paper package, e-Apostille, scan-back, or tracked delivery.

Documents this review can cover

signer-created POA, affidavit, authorization, public company record, certified civil or court record, academic record or eligible federal criminal-record certificate

What Notary Geek handles

We identify the source and required certifications, explain missing items, and agree the supported document-handling and delivery steps with you. You do not need to choose an apostille or legalization process on your own.

Common examples

Common documents to bring for review

These are examples that may fit review. They are not promises that every document from or for the destination can be apostilled through one upload path.

For each example, confirm the document source, signer facts, destination recipient and shipping requirement before choosing the route.

What must be confirmed

The quote follows the facts.

  • the exact issuing office, public signature and document category
  • destination territory, transaction date and intended receiving procedure
  • recipient requirements for wording, record age, certified copies, complete attachments and translations
  • any document-specific preliminary certification or applicable exemption
  • paper or eligible electronic output, official payment, submission and return arrangements
  • signer location and notarial jurisdiction when a new notarial act is actually needed

Confirm delivery before sending originals

Tracked international shipping can be part of the workflow when appropriate, but carrier availability, exact address, and current surcharge risk are confirmed before shipment.

The review covers whether the receiving party needs original paper, an e-Apostille, a scan-back or tracked delivery. A scan-back does not replace a required original.

Your next step

Start with review, or continue with a ready document

Choose based on what you already know. Opening either option does not confirm a document route, order or booking.
